Greenhouse gases
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges humanity has to face. Greenhouse gases emissions need to be halved globally which means the most developed countries have to reduce their own by 75 to 80% by 2050. The main sources of these emissions are transports, industry, buildings, power production, agriculture and deforestation. Every product or system using fossil energy (coal, oil, natural gas) is part of the problem and has to be part of the solution. Several international and EU legislation are in place and more will come. They relate to capping emissions in the industry, saving energy, developing clean and renewable sources of energy, improving vehicules and appliances, changing the rules in urbanism and transport modes, reducing intrants in agriculture, etc.
All these policies may be connected to standardisation activities. The most relevant horizontal committees and groups in ISO, CEN and CENELEC are:
- ISO/TC 207 SC 7 "Greenhouse gases management and related activities" (formerly ISO/TC 207 WG 5 "Climate change"),
- CEN "Strategic Advisory Body on the Environment",
- CEN & CENELEC "Sector Forum on Energy Management".
ECOS is member of most of these groups and has sent experts to participate in the ISO/TC 207 WG 5 and follow-up the ISO/CD 14064 standard on greenhouse gases. ECOS is also involved in more specific topics (e.g. Energy performance of Buildings or Ecodesign of Products - see related sections).
