Green strategies in standardisation

CEN and CENELEC - the main European standardisation bodies - have established internal advisory and strategic committees to improve coordination and planning of the integration of environmental aspects in standardisation.

ECOS has been participating since its creation in the following:

  • CEN/SABE "Strategic Advisory Body on the Environment": this board of stakeholders provides exchange of information on environmental issues, coordinates CEN activities and standard development related to the environment and elaborates CEN environmental strategy.
  • CEN/SABE/ENIS "Integration of Environmental Aspects in Standardisation": this team promotes integration of environmental concerns in standards development through training programs and support for experts.
  • CENELEC/TC 111X "Environment": this technical committee has a horizontal role to coordinate CENELEC activities related to environmental concerns and exchange information on environmental aspects in electrotechnical standards.
  • CEN & CENELEC "Sector Forum Energy Management": SFEM was established in 2005 in order to anticipate standardisation needs in the field of energy management, to benchmark energy efficiency policies and to propose new standardisation works in response to EU legislation (for instance: white certificates, renewable energy systems, etc.)

From 2008, ECOS has been particularly focusing its efforts on these points:

  • Finalisation and implementation of the CEN/SABE Environmental Strategy
  • Introduction of mandatory elements in the standardisation processes to ensure environmental aspects are covered
  • Improvement of the CEN Environmental helpdesk
  • Energy management and energy certificates in SFEM.
